Who We Are

We are Team 2152 -- TEAM S*M*A*S*H!

Welcome to the power of S*M*A*S*H - Daytona Beach's first and only participating team in the International FIRST Robotics Program! With members from three different Volusia County High Schools (Spruce Creek, New Smyrna, and Mainland), we are quickly expanding to introduce the engineers of tomorrow into the field today. Generous assistance, from mentoring to engineering, offered to us from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Daytona State College has allowed us to become what we are today.

Team S*M*A*S*H originated from the original Spruce Creek Robotics started at Spruce Creek as a club that primarily participated in Botball competitions.

In November of 2006, Spruce Creek High School formed a FIRST Robotics Team, Team 2152, known as 'Team Raptor'. We started off as a partnership involving Spruce Creek High School working with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach Community College (now known Daytona State College), and engineers from the local area. We competed in the 2007 competition, Rack 'N' Roll with a lifter robot with good success in lifting as a rookie team. Later in the year, we traveled to Tampa to participate in Tempest 'N Tampa.

For the 2008 Competition season, 'Team Raptor' was re-branded into 'Team Daytona' with the inclusion of two other Volusia County high schools: New Smyrna Beach High School and Mainland High School. For Team Daytona we adopted the colors yellow and black. For the competition Overdrive our robot was a fast forklift and performed relatively successfully.

In 2009 Competition we competed in Lunacy and did better than we have ever done before! We seeded 13th place at regionals, a new best for the team.

But for the 2010 Competition season our team decided to undergo a re-branding. 'Team Daytona' did not reflect the spirit and vitality of our team and was made specifically for the 2007 challenge. We wanted a fresh start, to reinvent ourselves. In our re-branding, we decided to call ourselves 'Team S*M*A*S*H' and we changed our colors to orange, black and silver. We're looking forward to this year with a new coach and new game, Breakaway, to prove ourselves in competition.

In addition to participation in the FIRST Robotics Competition, Team S*M*A*S*H also sponsors four teams in the FIRST Technical Challenge, another FIRST program involving smaller robots. Team S*M*A*S*H sponsors FTC teams: Team 128, Team 132, Team 531 and Team 532. Through the FTC program we help students gain interest and ability to succeed in the FIRST Robotics Competition. In addition, we have further participation in FIRST with our own FTC Regional held at our school, Robotfest!

Team S*M*A*S*H also mentors two teams from Creekside Middle School in another FIRST program for middle school students, the FIRST Lego League (FLL). We've been working with them for four years and we've sponsored their competitions. It gives middle school students a chance to try their hand in robotics and foster interest in Robotics.

As a school, we have built an academy encompassing the our robotics program to promote robotics and technology throughout the school. The Academy of Information Technology and Robotics program was created in 2007 and was mostly inspired by the former Robotics club. The Academy encourages all members to join and contribute towards our Robotics program and teaches high school students the basics of information technology, game design, and robotics.

We have also been a major part of the community and the school. We've been working with the local Rotary Club and the Florida Engineering Society, showcased at Cypress Creek Elementary School Science Fair for three years, participated in the Academy Showcase, and represented our school in the local Fox News Cool School of the Week twice (2008 and 2009).
